Michael Hantke Domas has developed, over more than 25 years, a legal career focused on water law, natural resources, and environmental law, shaped through complementary roles as a judge, academic, lawyer, consultant, public servant, and international official. This multifaceted perspective enables him to address environmental and water-related issues from the different arenas where they are effectively decided — judicial, regulatory, academic, and negotiation. He holds a law degree from Universidad Andrés Bello (Chile) and a PhD from the University of East Anglia (United Kingdom). For six years, he served as a Full Member Judge of the Third Environmental Court, based in Valdivia, where he was its first President and led its establishment. At the international level, he is Vice-Chair of the Water and Wetlands Specialist Group of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, and a member of various academic and professional associations in environmental and water law. He is a professor at Universidad San Sebastián and an academic affiliate of the International Water Law Academy at Wuhan University, China. In parallel, he maintains a sustained academic output in his areas of expertise. He currently practices as an international lawyer and consultant, combining professional practice with teaching, research, and participation in global water governance forums.
